Often referred to as ‘moobs’ or ‘man boobs’, male breasts are caused by a build-up of fatty deposits in the chest and breast area. Lifestyle choices including poor diet and/or lack of exercise are common causes of this condition, but male breasts can also be hereditary or can be caused by hormonal changes, in particular Gynecomastia, a condition caused by a decrease in the amount of testosterone in the body.

What is gynaecomastia?

Gynaecomastia (sometimes referred to as "man boobs") is a common condition that causes boys' and men's breasts to swell and become larger than normal. It is most common in teenage boys and older men.

What are the signs of gynaecomastia?

Signs vary from a small amount of extra tissue around the nipples to more prominent breasts. It can affect one or both breasts.

Sometimes, the breast tissue can be tender or painful, but this isn't always the case.

What causes gynaecomastia?

There are many factors that can cause gynaecomastia however, there are few common ones:

  • Hormone imbalance;
  • Puberty;
  • Obesity;
  • Older age;
  • Drug abuse.
